As per the law passed by four states - AP, TN, Maharashtra, and Karnataka - (Kerala law being different) in a Joint Hindu Family governed by Mitakshara Law, the daughter of a coparcener by birth becomes a coparcener in her own right in the same manner as the son and has the same rights in the coparcenary property as she would have had if she had been a son, inclusive of the right to claim survivorship, and is subject to the same liabilities and disabilities in respect thereto as the son. Of course, this change in the law is prospective and daughters married prior to the coming into force of the law have been excluded.
